MAO LIZI CV

Mao Lizi was a founding member of the avant-garde Stars Group in the early 1980s and a pioneer of the Chinese contemporary art. Though he was initially a self-taught painter, Mao received a Master of Arts degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and now lives and works between Paris and Beijing. Working across multiple disciplines, Mao is known for his paintings, design work and architecture. In 1991 he was awarded first place at the International Art Exhibition in Paris.

Mao’s style has changed dramatically over the years, from hyper-realistic to abstract paintings with an uncontrolled natural rhythm. Inspired by traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, Mao is well known for the simplicity of his paintings, which looks like magnified inky dots. His abstract painting captures the aesthetics of beauty, freedom and the spirit of zen, usually highlighting the space surrounding the painting, drawing the viewer into a kind of meditative contemplation.
