JUN MATSUMURA 松村淳 CV

Matsumura was trained at the Tajimi City Ceramics Design Institute and Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo (Crafts Studio). Growing up surrounded by Japanese philosophy and subcultures, his creations are influenced by the practice of Kogei (Japanese traditional arts and crafts). Matsumura uses porcelain as the medium to reflect on the delicate balance of modern culture, prompting the audience to rethink the current situations in society and the underlying consequences.

I create ideal artefacts by extracting forms out of nature. This overlaps with the act of creating ceramics which turns clay into something irreversible by firing. After being fired, clay obtains the qualities of being eternal, at the same time the quality of fragility.
In my work, I enhance the tension which occurs the moment I confront ceramics by expressing the unstable balance, and let the viewers recognise the transience of this material world and the understanding of the feeling of one’s existence.
