Intersections of Abstraction

08 September – 20 October 2023

Intersections of Abstraction is a multi-disciplinary art exhibition featuring the works of five talented female artists: Miyuki Yokomizo and Yu Tanaka from Japan, Agnes Lim, Daisy Toh, and Nurlisa Ho from Singapore. Through their distinct art forms of linear abstract art, delicate porcelain, and sculptural ceramics, this showcase of talented female artists aims to celebrate the beauty of individuality while highlighting the harmonious connections that can be forged through the exploration of texture, materiality, and personal narratives.

Despite the diversity in their artistic practices, these five artists share a profound dedication to their craft and a commitment to expressing their unique perspectives. Nurlisa Ho, with her fabric-based linear art, captures the essence of authentic human experiences. Her pieces, presented in pastel shades, offer a sense of lightness and invite viewers to pause and reflect on their states of mind. This introspective quality resonates with the works of Yokomizo Miyuki, whose abstract paintings feature extreme repetition of fine lines, creating depth, and a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors. Both artists captivate viewers with their ability to convey complex emotions through the interplay of texture and form. Through her intricate craftsmanship, Agnes Lim transforms clay into beautiful creations that tell their own stories, prompting viewers to ponder the deeper narratives of Life. Daisy Toh highlights her fascination with coloured slips, prompting viewers to slow down and observe, encouraging a connection to the timeless essence of art. Yu Tanaka, on the other hand, uses clay to create ceramic works that resemble realistic boxes wrapped in cloth. Her soft curves and drapes give the impression that there is something hidden within, instilling a sense of curiosity and mystery. The cloth itself becomes a central element, possessing the power to stand on its own and evoke a range of emotions.

‘Intersections of Abstraction’ offers a unique multi-dimensional sensory experience highlighting the shared exploration of texture and materiality across different artistic disciplines, allowing viewers to discover the connections and contrasts between fabric, paint, and clay. The juxtaposition of the various art forms sparks dialogues on the potential of art to transcend boundaries and create new narratives. This prompts viewers to contemplate the human experience, evoke emotions, and foster a deeper understanding of the world around us.
