In Quiet Pursuit of the Self(less)

26 May – 8 July 2023

This exhibition of new works by Singaporean artist Soh Ee Shaun is titled In Quiet Pursuit of the Self(less). Ee Shaun's new paintings on paper, a culmination of his MFA studies at Falmouth University, investigate the concept of selflessness through a contemplative exploration of movement, color, energy, and space. In these works, the artist seeks to convey the nuances, beauty, and complexity of emptiness–both through the relative nature of color, and the elusive nature of the self. Reminiscent of color-field and modernist abstraction, characterized by a unique blend of Eastern and Western aesthetics, these paintings also recall traditional Chinese painting techniques that evoke calm and serenity, movement, and dynamism. With each new painting, Ee Shaun offers us a quiet and contemplative space; an invitation to reflect on the nature of the self, and to embrace stillness and quietness in our pursuit of peace and solitude.“Ee Shaun's paintings are not just depictions and illustrations of enlightened states of mind,” notes Dominic Chua, a writer, historian, and student of Buddhist studies at the Ranjung Yeshe Institute in Nepal,“ but dharmic art that draws the viewer into the very state that they depict.” These paintings have the power to draw aside the veil that conceals us from the fresh, natural state of our minds, blowing us open into the richness of this colorful and challenging world.
