CHIKAKO INABA 稲葉周子 CV

Inaba started to exhibit her works in Japan after her studies at Musushino Art University in 1996 and Tajimi City Pottery and Design Institute in 2001. She is deeply inspired by nature, and especially, the curling and withering leaves of local vegetation like the lotus and orchid plants with their pronounced veins. Her ceramic pieces are leaf-like, sculptural and exudes elegance in all forms.

I use leaves as a motif in my work.
The shape of the leaf itself, the flow of its veins, and the way it withers and curls look to reflect the strength of life and even the will.
Leaves have been used as vessels since ancient times. The withered and curled shape is like a bowl, lying on the earth with water in it which seems to be a preparation for returning to the soil and nurturing the next life with an agony. I take this very precious and want to express it.
The pottery will not return to the soil, but I, living in this age, would like to create vessels that can accept others and nurture life with water.
