Ceramic Expressions 6th Edition - New Earth

28 October – 30 November 2023

The sixth edition of Ceramics Expressions showcased works by Singapore-based ceramicists. Featuring recent works by 12 Singapore ceramicists, as well as signature pieces by international guest artist Yoshimi Futamura.

Initiated by Mulan Gallery in 2017 to present new developments in Singapore's modern ceramic art, Ceramic Expressions is an annual group exhibition series that seeks to foster new explorations in ceramic art. Firmly placing the development of artists in their creative journeys front and centre, Ceramic Expressions foregrounds studies in new styles and techniques fusing fire and clay, concept and creativity into a potent amalgamation and unique embodiment of living art. This group exhibition series seeks to showcase the creativity and diversity of contemporary ceramic art while promoting artistic exchange, learning, and collaboration between Singapore-based and international ceramicists.

Since its inception, Ceramic Expressions has showcased the works of some 40 Singapore and international artists across a diversity of works and themes. Artists are invited to present pertinent examinations of the exigencies of the times while imagining and considering possible futures. Over the years, the number and scope of the artists and works featured have steadily grown. The third edition showcased for the first time the works of invited international ceramicists – leading figures in contemporary ceramics with works in major international public collections. The next two editions were held during Singapore Art Week. The fifth edition featured, for the first time, an all-women slate of artists carving out unique spaces in the field of ceramic art, together with a fundraising effort for Assisi Hospice.

Participating artists Agnes Lim, Alan Chong, Daisy Toh, Hairol Bin Mohamed Hossain, Hazel Ng, Hiroko Mita, Leng Soh, Lim Kim Hui, Suriani Suratman, Tan Shao Qi, Teo Huey Ling and Teo Huey Min were invited to introspect and respond to the transformative times we are living in, to contemplate and reimagine what the future might hold, and what life and nature might look like in the aftermath.
