Ceramic Expressions (5th Edition): Celebrating Women Artists

14 January – 22 January 2022 (Japan Creative Centre)
25 January – 12 FEBRUARY 2022 (Mulan Gallery)

Ceramic Expressions, a Singapore group exhibition series fostering new explorations in ceramic art, celebrates its fifth edition this year. In a first for the series, this edition features an all-women selection of artists, including two international guest artists, who are carving out unique spaces in the field of ceramic art.

Showcasing a diversity of work by women artists working in the field of ceramics, this exhibition has as its focus works that go beyond the functional. Featuring recent works by 12 outstanding Asian women ceramicists, including signature pieces by international guest artists Fujino Sachiko and Hoshino Kayoko, this edition of Ceramic Expressions centres on women artists who are going beyond the pot and forging their own paths in the field of ceramic art, thus continuing in its mission to showcase artists who are shaping the field of contemporary ceramics with their work.

A Time of Rethinking
From the unrelenting viral pandemic to the exigencies of the accelerating climate crisis sweeping across the globe, the world has been thrown into existential disarray and a state of questioning as never before. Thinking about the future is undergoing radical transformation, necessitating and accelerating paradigmatic shifts in priorities and systems of production all across the world. Through a focus on exploring non-functional forms, the works by these artists present an examination of the exigencies of the times we live in, while imagining and considering possible futures. From more traditional, meditative works organically shaped by the clay, to assertive, statement pieces that pursue more singular visions, from those that examine the deeply personal to those expressing thoughts about the state of things in the world and concerns about the future, this exhibition celebrates the imagination and diversity of work by women artists speaking potently through clay.

The Spirit of Resilience
As part of an inaugural charity fundraising effort, the ten participating artists for the fifth edition of Ceramic Expressions have been invited to create an additional new work in response to a theme: the spirit of resilience. "Safe as houses" is a commonly used phrase that suggests something that is utterly safe and reliable. Each taking the form of a house, the works of these women ceramic artists in this section of the exhibition suggest that, during times of great uncertainty and change as these, it is our connection with the self, with nature, and with one another that can be depended on for our sense of well-being and equanimity. Assisi Hospice is the adopted charity for the fifth edition of Ceramic Expressions. It provides palliative care and support for over 2,000 patients with life-limiting illnesses annually. All funds raised through this themed section of the exhibition in the form of direct donations to Assisi Hospice will go towards providing crucial end-of-life care and services for needy patients and their families.
